I too recently adopted Aperture and love it, and was wondering about the exact same issue (my laptop drive space si getting scarce). After reading the Apple doc and figuring out the "Vaults" were not my solution, I searched Google for "aperture laptop move files external hard drive" and boom, I fall on this as the 1st result.
